Since 1976

The Oswal family

Three generations, one name.

The Oswal Group began in 1976. Oswal Creations is what the third generation built with it.

A family business is not handed over in a single day. It is handed over in habits.

What passed from Vardichand ji to Bhawarlal ji, and from Bhawarlal ji to Sumith, was not a shop. It was a way of buying cloth, pricing it honestly and remembering who walked in last month.

Vardichand ji Oswal

Founder, Oswal Group

The Oswal Group started in 1976, under Vardichand ji Oswal. It began the way most family businesses in this part of Karnataka began: with cloth, a counter, and a willingness to work longer hours than anyone expected.

There was no brand to trade on and no advertising. What he built instead was a reputation that travelled by word of mouth, from one family to the next, through a town small enough that a bad sale was remembered for years.

He sold to neighbours. That set the standard for everything after.

Bhawarlal ji Oswal carried the group forward. The work of a second generation is rarely the dramatic part of a family story, and it is usually the part that decides whether there is a third.

He held the group steady through decades in which a great many small businesses did not survive, widened what it dealt in, and kept the relationships his father had built intact while the town around them changed.

The generation that keeps a business is the reason there is one to inherit.

Sumith Oswal

Proprietor, Oswal Creations

In 2012 Sumith Oswal opened Oswal Creations in Tiptur, continuing the family trade in his own direction: women's clothing, chosen and stocked personally rather than ordered from a list.

The inheritance was never the stock. It was the judgement about what to buy, what to charge for it, and how to speak to the person standing across the counter. That is what the store runs on now, alongside the collections that keep pace with what women are actually wearing.

Fifty years of relationships, carried into a store of his own.
